Alternatives to Violence (ATV)

ATV MEN'S CLASSES IN LAKEPORT AND CLEARLAKE/WOMEN'S CLASSES IN LP

Alternatives to Violence (ATV) is a 52-week program for men and women referred by the Court or Probation for domestic violence offenses.  Two-hour classes are held weekly in gender-specific classes in Lakeport.

Learning is not always easy, and there is usually pain behind the anger in relational conflict, but we try so hard to avoid the pain, that we release the anger in frustration unwittingly missing the entire meaning of the experience, which in many cases is a challenge to choose a path in the face of a crisis.  We have about 7 seconds during a critical moment to choose the low road of patience, understanding, compassion or forgiveness instead of pride, blame and defensiveness (or offensiveness...attack), and therefore miss some of the most rewarding aspects of relationship, especially in love relationships.

Our goal is to make the classes interesting and enjoyable as well as continuously instructive about new ways to perceive or respond to stressful relationships or situations.  Our facilitators are trained by experts in the fields of therapeutic communications, mood moderation, coping skills, personal and life skills and habits, anger management, self-care, safety, gender communications, parenting and money-management, along with ongiong group treatment of addictive behaviors and personality disorders.  While our first obligation is ethically and legally to the victim, we also work toward the development of communication and self-containment within a context of empathy and support for perpetrators in order to practice a level playing field for participants to learn and emulate with anger management and non-violent skill sets.
